10th Anniversary of the Bali Bombings 2002

October 12, 2012 By Tinker Leave a Comment

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the Bali Bombings 2002.

Numbers in their thousands, including the survivors and the family members and friends who lost their loved ones, will attend the 10th anniversary commemorations.

Though I was not in Bali on that night, it felt as if I was, as news beamed live into our lounge rooms, much like 9/11.

I remember vividly watching an Aussie bloke… ordinary as you and I… do something completely EXTRAORDINARY and like you I was glued to the TV screen like a magnet… as this bloke told us “nah I’m fine mate. There are worse people off than me” after he had selflessly gone back in and out to save lives.

Peter HughesAnd that Aussie bloke is West Australian Peter Hughes, who redefined the word Hero displaying the selfless Aussie digger spirit to the core.

You know life brings people in and out of your life and I am humbled to call Peter Hughes my mate, my friend.

Here today in Bali attending the 10th Anniversary commemorations with Peter Hughes, his son Leigh and Leigh’s girlfriend Andrea; I am a proud supporter of the Peter Hughes Burn Foundation ((hyperlink to the Peter Hughes Burn Foundation website).

As survivor Erik de Haart of Sydney says: “Ten years – you think you get past it, it’s tough but you have to get it out, it has to be done. It’s time for me to go back and it’s time to face some demons and I guess settle and move on.”

And as you reflect today, ask yourself; “What am I grateful for? What demons am I still holding onto?” as today is a great day to face those demons and move on.

Lest We Forget.
